Favorite Books and Blogs

I have gone through a number of cookbooks of all different types. These are some that I find myself always going back to...

Baking and Pastry: Mastering the Art and Craft

This is basically a text book from the Culinary Institute of America. It scared me to death the first time I looked at it but as long as you take it slow and HAVE A SCALE you'll be fine. It's pages also stand up very well to the messy splattering of the over enthusiastic at home cook that I am so that's a bonus.

It's All Good:Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great

I know that people think she is a snob because she used duck eggs for things like waffles...but really if you don't want to buy duck eggs then don't- the recipes are GOOD and really good for you too. For example- my boyfriend thinks that meat is the only food group and still eats things from this earthy-crunchy-foodie kind of book. If you are skeptical, make the candy bars....you'll never turn back.

The History Kitchen
An overwhelmingly interesting blog about the history of food! You could spend hours....

Go-To Recipes

Below are links to some of my favorite go-to recipes...

Martha Stewart's Fluffy White Frosting

Perfectly fluffy, just the right amount of sweetness, and holds like a rock when refrigerated. This frosting works well if you want something pretty that also tastes good. As long as you beat it hard enough and refrigerate after decorating it will hold shape and STILL be soft!

I always feel like a superhero when I bring these places! They are excellent, impossible to mess up, and easily converted to gluten-free.

The buttermilk in this recipe makes this cake incredible.

The BEST Chocolate Cupcakes with Salted Caramel Frosting

I made these for the first time for a friend's wedding. She sent me the recipe on a whim- now I don't think I will ever be the same!

My Equipment

How I love my stuff! I don't like using fancy appliances but I have a few basic requirements. Being a new teacher, most of my things are hand-me downs from my mom and two older sisters- I think that may be why I like them so much.

1. My 30 year old Kitchenaid mixer- Passed down through my mom and sisters before it landed in my hands, it has had 4 owners and is still going strong.

2. This great old gas stove- another hand-me-down from my Great Grandmother and two sisters.

3. Digital Kitchen Scale- I love the digital version version partly because I can make bets with my boyfriend about how close I can get to the right weight in one shot.

4. A good, solid rubber spatula...seriously- I tried getting one from the dollar store first and it just didn't work.

5. A whisk...because they're so good and mixing and the word whisk is just so fun to say.
